WIMBORNE by Lisa Falconer

Lisa Falconer is the head of an award-winning independent sewing pattern company The Avid Seamstress which is dedicated to empowering makers. Her design, the WIMBORNE coat is created to wrap the wearer in a cocoon of warmth. Made from wool, the shape of the garment creates a soft embrace, with the balloon sleeves adding a unique detail. The coat is fully lined, with the option to use a pop of colour in the lining to brighten up those winter days.

The red sample coat without lining is made from boiled wool (100% wool, 11.35 oz/385 gsm). The dark grey sample is made from “Italian Deadstock Twill Wool” by Bottoli (100% wool, 8.85 oz/300 gsm) and the lining is vis- cose from the designer’s stash (approximately 4.13 oz/140 gsm). Both wools are from Fabric Romance.

The WIMBORNE coat is available in Issue No.5

HEILA by Juha Vehmaanperä

Helsinki-based knitwear designer Juha Vehmaanperä has a great passion for colour, crafts, hand-knitting, and crochet techniques. The ethos of their garment-making process is to create unisex clothing with a mindset that clothes are not gendered by definition but by society at large.

Juha’s design process often starts at a flea market and the HEILA bag is created from handmade vintage doilies. It is designed to carry everyday necessities like unfinished knitting projects and a gorgeous book. It is a a fun hand-sewing project, Juha’s version of popular net-like crochet bags.

The HEILA bag is available in Issue No.5

VALLEY by Bren Larsen

Bren Larsen is a mother of five and a self-taught sewist, an owner of 20th and Ives, an organic children’s clothing company.

Her beginner friendly pattern design, VALLEY slip dress, is inspired by the lines of rolling hills and mountains. The front hem of the dress curves up like a hill while the back hem swoops down, creating the drop of a valley. It is a classy slip-on dress which is easy to make and alter. Bren’s favourite fabrics for this design include pleated velvet/velour and plissé.

The sample dress is made from pleated jersey in camel (65% polyester and 35% viscose, 7.37 oz/250 gsm) from Un chat sur un fil.

The VALLEY dress is available in Issue No.5

DILLON by Christine Haynes

Christine Haynes is a sewing instructor, patternmaker, and author. She teaches in-person and online workshops from her vintage bungalow on Lake Michigan. She likes to spend a lot of time out in nature, gathering and collecting treasures, filling her pockets with flowers and vegetables. Her longing for a design with big pockets that hint back to utilitarian yet feminine garment, inspired the classic apron wrap dress, DILLON.

DILLON is a classic apron wrap dress and the beauty of this design is that it can be styled in a variety of ways. It is easy to customise by changing the length of the skirt, omitting the optional patch pockets, or leaving off the bib and shoulder straps to create a wrap skirt. Since DILLON is a wrap style, the fit is very forgiving.

The plain sample dress is made from “Nisa Softened Linen” in grape (100% linen, 5.31 oz/180 gsm) from Siebenblau and the printed dress is made from light- weight “Sunnuntai Blue Cotton Fabric” (100% cotton, approximately 2.06 oz/70 gsm) by Kauniste.

The DILLON apron dress is available in Issue No.5

MULA by Andini Wijendaru

Andini Wijendaru is a maker based in Jakarta, Indonesia. She gets inspiration for her designs from the heritage of textile-making and artisans’ work.

The MULA trousers are inspired by the plaids and boxy silhouettes popular in the 1960s, this design offers uncomplicated style. You can wear these simple trousers in multiple ways: leave the legs loose or button them up for a harem pants style. Pair them with mules, high heels, ankle boots, or sneakers – whatever suits your look! There’s lots of room to vary the style depending on the fabric you choose: consider twill or jersey for summer, flannel or wool for autumn and winter.

The beige sample is made from undyed and unbleached “Hemp Twill Natural” (100% hemp, 9.73oz/330 gsm) from Siebenblau. The blue sample is made from “100% Wool Suiting Fabric” (3.83 oz/130 gsm) in navy blue from Minerva.

The MULA trousers are available in Issue No.5

RAMONA by Sadie Egan

Sadie Egan is an “and” not an “or” type of person and a creator from Northern California. She has dabbled in ceramics, watercolour, graphic design, collage, natural dyeing, knitting, quilting, sewing, and, most recently, creating patterns. Her self-described style is a “1940s Spaghetti-Western prairie-goat- herdess mom-core alpine-ski-lodge disco vibe”.

The RAMONA noon dress is a fanciful lounge garment meant to be thrown on at noon, when you roll out of bed and start a leisurely day of puttering about your home or neighbourhood haunts. It has an elegant appearance with comfort- able and wearable design details meant to be accessible (no zips/buttons) and fabulous on all shapes and sizes of humans. The pattern comes with two sleeve options, optional ruffle additions, and three skirt options, including a blouse length. There are endless layering options to dress the garment up or down, making it an equally great choice for repose or chores.

The sample dress is made from “Crawford” 100% cotton gingham (3.04 oz/103 gsm), and the blouse is made from medium-weight 100% cotton “Yarn Dyed Diamond Weave”. Both fabrics by Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics.

The RAMONA dress is available in Issue No.5

DOZE by Elles Thé lanfer

Elles Thé Lanfer is a designer and patternmaker based in Enschede, the Netherlands. She caught the sewing bug at age 14 and studied fashion design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Elles loves the challenge of turning three-dimensional designs into two-dimensional patterns that are easy to follow and help other makers explore their own creativity.

For the design of the DOZE sweater, Elles played around with the feeling of drowsiness. Picture yourself sitting on the couch after a long, cold winter hike, surrendering to that feeling – DOZE was designed with that state in mind. It’s an oversized, comfortable sweater that takes you from activity to lounging while keeping you warm and protected. The pattern offers three different neck finishes: a collar, neckband, and cross-over hood. The front of the sweater hits just below the hip, but you can easily extend the design to tunic or dress length or shorten it to make a cropped sweater.

The samples are made from “GOTS Certified Brushed Sweat” (100% organic cot- ton, 8.26 oz/280 gsm) in rose and navy by Ecological Textiles.

The DOZE sweater is available in Issue No.5

VELMA by Andini Wijendaru

The VELMA top is Andini's second design for this issue. For her, timeless and versatile design ensures that a garment will be cherished for a long time to come and she created the VELMA top to be worn in different ways. It can be worn loose, as a boxy oversized piece or fitted in the arms and/or waist by closing the buttons. “Sometimes we think we don’t have enough in our wardrobe. But actually, we do! The boredom of wearing the same clothes has inspired this top. Influenced by the boxy styles of the 1960s, it’s meant to be a timeless piece that can be casual or more formal. VELMA is about liberating your style to be the way you want it.”

The sample long-sleeved top is made from “Organic Wool Felt Jersey” in green (100% organic virgin wool, 7.08 oz/240 gsm) from Siebenblau. The sample short-sleeved top is made from French terry “ColorBlossom Golden Summer” (95% organic cotton 5% elastane, 6.19 oz/210 gsm) by Astrokatze.

The VELMA top is available in Issue No.5

REGINA by Joanne Au

Joanne Au is a Malaysian hobby sewist based in Aotearoa, New Zealand. She believes that life is a brief, unstoppable hurtle into the void, and all things should accordingly be as joyous, stupid, and fun as possible. She likes cats, black sesame milk tea, and dan dan noodles. She debuts as sewing pattern designer for the TAUKO Magazine issue No. 5 as REGINA is her first sewing pattern.

The REGINA pants are a whimsical addition to your wardrobe for days when you want to “present externally as a beautiful, put-together butterfly that knows how to change a tire and do its own taxes, but internally feel like a cocoon that just wants to be cosy and warm and left alone”. It is a simple pattern without zippers and buttons and it invites you to experiment with mixing different fabrics, adding ruffles and gussets.

The sample without the gussets is made from “Diamond Quilted Organic Jersey” in terracotta (93% organic cotton and 7% recycled polyester, both GOTS certified, 9.44 oz/320 gsm) from Un chat sur un fil. The stripy sample with gussets is made from reused polycotton fabric (4.13 oz/140 gsm) from the designer’s stash.

The REGINA pants are available in Issue No.5

HIGHLAND by Bren Larsen

Bren Larsen is a museum educator based in the Washington, DC area. With degrees in art history and muse- um education, she is drawn to art in many forms – especially painting, cooking, singing, and sewing.

The HIGHLAND cropped sweater features gathered, structured balloon sleeves. This piece can be worn over the VALLEY slip dress – Bren’s other design for this issue – or dressed down with jeans and a T-shirt. The sweater works best with medium to heavyweight knits that have little to no stretch. Suitable fabrics include wool stretch knits, wool coating blends, quilted knits, brushed sweater knits, sweatshirt fleeces, and medium/heavyweight French terry.

The long-sleeved sample sweater is made from “GOTS Certified Brushed Sweat” (100% organic cotton, 8.26 oz/280 gsm) in navy by Ecological Tex- tiles. The cropped sleeve sample sweat- er is made from "Minerva Core Range 100% Boiled Wool Coating Fabric” (ap- proximately 6.19oz/210 gsm) in denim blue from Minerva.
