#19 Nordic Summer

Online Flipbook, a sneak peek at issue No.19.
Click “play” to start the preview.

This issue celebrates the unique spirit of the Nordic summer, bright nights, playful creativity, and practical garments designed for life between nature and the city. It’s a fleeting moment that brings joy and a gentle sense of urgency: the feeling that every day should be lived to the fullest.

Nordic style holds a fascinating contradiction. Alongside its minimalism lives a strong sense of playfulness and freedom. With fewer rigid dress codes and a shorter fashion tradition in the North, there has always been space for bold colours, unexpected ideas, and joyful experimentation. Nordic culture embraces both simplicity and exuberance.

Inside, you’ll discover 9 sewing patterns by independent designers from around the world, inspired by the experience of Nordic summer. Expect practical garments made for layering, designs that move effortlessly between city and nature, and pieces that capture the freedom of long midsummer nights.

Each pattern design comes with printed sewing patterns and step-by-step instructions, making them accessible for sewists of all skill levels. With sizes ranging from 31" (78 cm) to 57.5" (146 cm) bust, these patterns celebrate creativity for every body.

Practicality. Light. Playfulness. A touch of beautiful madness.

Alongside the patterns, you’ll find essays and stories exploring Nordic style from new perspectives, revealing how diverse and evolving this tradition truly is.

Welcome to Nordic summer.

LAINE by Eeva Aalto @taitojamit
#TAUKOlaine

  • The LAINE top and dress tie at the shoulder with wide, flowing straps that cascade almost to the waistline, creating a soft, wave-like effect. You can choose between shorter or longer shoulder ties, as well as two finishing options: bias binding for the armscyes, or combined front and back facings that also finish the armscyes. In our samples, the dress has longer ties and full facings, while the top has shorter ties and bias-bound armscyes. Follow these instructions as shown, or mix and match the elements to suit your personal preference.

The slightly cropped, A-line top pairs easily with a variety of bottoms and flatters many body shapes. The adjustable ties allow for a personalized fit. LAINE can also be made into a graceful A-line dress with side seam pockets, providing a versatile, timeless addition to any wardrobe.

  • Choose a medium-weight woven fabric with a beautiful drape. Viscose, cotton, and linen are all good options.

GERDA by Oda Stormoen / @odaothilia
#TAUKOgerda

  • The GERDA dress is an ankle-length, waist-hugging summer dress with short sleeves, designed for sunny days and warm nights. The softly gathered bodice meets a defined waist seam, creating volume and comfort through the upper body and highlighting the waistline. The skirt is shaped with tailored panels that add elegant lines and a flattering drape, while allowing plenty of room to move.

GERDA can be made with or without a lining, allowing for versatility in terms of fabric choice. An invisible centre-back zip provides a neat finish, and optional side seam pockets offer added practicality for everyday wear.

  • Choose light to medium-weight woven fabrics with a soft drape, such as linen, cotton, or a viscose or silk blend.

CREST by Birgitta Helmersson / @birgittahelmersson #TAUKOcrest

  • CREST is a zero-waste design featuring signature ties that adjust the fit and silhouette. It can be made into either a dress or a blouse and uses the full width of the fabric. Any scraps are turned into casings and ties. No overlocker is required as folded seams and casings create clean, raw-edge-free finishes. With fully illustrated sewing instructions, this project introduces the fundamentals of zero-waste garment construction and neat seam finishes while ensuring the sewing process remains accessible and enjoyable.

The design is created using two pattern templates. The pattern is measured and drawn directly onto the fabric. This method differs fundamentally from the process of tracing and sewing from ready-made patterns.

  • Choose medium-weight woven fabrics, such as cotton, linen, viscose, or Tencel.

INARI by Essi Kontio / @eik.a
#TAUKOinari

  • The INARI top/jacket is a versatile design with pleat detailing that shapes the silhouette. The fabric is gathered softly at the bodice and flows into voluminous sleeves.

The boxy top features a relaxed, architectural silhouette. Short sleeves and a clean neckline create an effortless shape, while hidden press studs maintain a calm, uninterrupted front. The top has an easy, warm-weather character while maintaining the striking pleat structure at the heart of the design.

The jacket offers a more tailored look with a high collar and long sleeves. Fitted closer to the body at the waist, it features a visible zipper that adds a functional, utilitarian touch while preserving a playful sense of volume.

Whether made in a structured woven fabric or a soft knit, INARI strikes a balance between simplicity and drama, encouraging you to experiment with proportions in a fresh, wearable, and distinctly personal way.

  • INARI works well in light to mediumweight fabrics, which allow the pleats to form cleanly without creating excess bulk. Crisp cottons or linens highlight the graphic lines, whereas brushed tracksuit knits, light denims, and stable sweatshirt fabrics create a softer look. Very heavy materials should be avoided as they may restrict movement and add unnecessary weight to the pleated sections.

SAGA by Essi Kontio / @eik.a
#TAUKOsaga

  • The SAGA trousers bring volume into everyday dressing. Their four front pleats gather fabric smoothly at the hip before flowing down into wide legs. Although the shape is expressive, SAGA is surprisingly easy to sew. It relies on an elastic waistband for comfort and a clean silhouette, eliminating the need for complex fastenings. SAGA looks elaborate but comes together with ease, making it ideal for experimenting with bold proportions. You can also extend the front pleats to your preferred length for a more personalized look.

Your choice of fabric sets the tone. Soft brushed tracksuit knits, sweatpants fabrics, or jersey create a relaxed, lounge-friendly version that moves gently with the body. Linen, cotton, lightweight denim, or twill offer more structure, allowing the pleats to stand out and the legs to maintain a sculptural shape. Either option offers a distinct character – from cosy and casual to crisp and architectural.

  • For a relaxed style, choose tracksuit knits, sweatpants fabrics, jersey, or viscose. For a more structured look, opt for linen, cotton, lightweight denim, or twill.

FRILLZ by Stina Löving / @stinaloving
#TAUKOfrillz

  • FRILLZ was designed for one purpose: to turn heads. It’s a true showstopper with extra everything and a serious wow factor. But it’s actually not hard to sew. We’ve removed all the tricky and time-consuming finishes from this expressive piece – no facings, linings, or zips (you’re welcome!).

The magic of this piece comes from ... you guessed it: the abundance of frills. Whether as a dress or a two-piece set, it is the ruffles that make this design truly special. And because of those ruffles, the possibilities are endless. You can completely change the vibe each time you make it – if you feel like making it more than once, that is! Try skipping the top ruffles and adding frills to the skirt only, or do the opposite and keep the skirt simple while adding drama to the top.

The skirt has a waistband tunnel with a tie for adjusting the width. Alternatively, you can use elastic instead of ties. Choose a skirt length that suits you. The samples include a long skirt with seven ruffle tiers, a top, and a short dress with three ruffle tiers. Good luck, and have fun!

  • For the ruffles: Lightweight fabrics truly shine when gathered. Look for airy, fluid options such as organza, tulle, or lace – materials that retain their volume without being heavy. Thicker fabrics can also be used, but be prepared for more effort at the sewing machine. Ideally, choose fabrics that are easy to serge, or even better, ones that don’t require any finishing, allowing the ruffle edge to remain light and effortless.

For the base pattern pieces: Ground the design with a fabric that offers a little more structure. Poplin, viscose, and cotton blends are stable yet comfortable, striking a quiet balance between support and softness.

FRAY by Anne Sofie Banke & Marie Friis Løye / @puff_and_pencil #TAUKOfray

  • These tailored trousers exude relaxed authority. FRAY has generous front pleats to create volume and movement, balanced by a clean front zip and a classic waistband with a button closure. French pockets sit seamlessly at the front, with only a flap suggesting the presence of a coin pocket.

Side panels sculpt the silhouette, shaping the back with quiet precision. The leg falls wide to a confident hem. Signature details include raw edges running vertically along the side panels and on the coin pocket flap, as well as distinctive button loops that emphasize the garment’s handmade character. The design is available in two lengths: full-length and Bermuda.

  • Choose medium to heavyweight, structured fabrics such as canvas, denim, cotton, hemp, or linen. Opt for tightly woven fabrics that do not fray easily. T

AGNÄS by Clara Kron / @rastlosheten
#TAUKOagnäs

  • The AGNÄS dress features V-shaped yokes with a gathered bodice and a tiered skirt. This slip-on dress without any zippers or buttons has gathered sleeves that come in ¾ or full-length options. You can emphasize the yoke by choosing a contrasting colour and adding a detachable belt in the same colour. The skirt consists of gathered tiers: two in the short version and four in the long. The voluminous skirt has practical side-seam pockets. French seams finish the bodice for a neat interior. A detachable belt can be tied at the waist to shift the fit from loose and floaty to more defined. This is the perfect summer dress for adventures or laidback, sunny days!

  • Choose light to medium-weight woven fabrics with a soft drape, such as linen or cotton. Old cotton bed linen, curtains, or large tablecloths work well for this design.

MORE FRILLS PLS by Suvi Ala-Venna / @kudelmiani #TAUKOmorefrillspls

  • The versatile and voluminous MORE FRILLS PLS is the perfect canvas on which to showcase your design flair. Play around with different fabrics, colours, and textures. This dress is all about frilling and chilling – not getting frazzled over perfection and technical accuracy. Play, make mistakes, and have fun with the pattern.

MORE FRILLS PLS is easy and breezy to wear and to sew. There are only a few pieces, which come together quickly. You can choose between long or short sleeves, and decide on your preferred detail: softly gathered frills for a playful finish, or neatly folded pleats that add sculptural structure. Once you’re ready, let’s get started!

  • This pattern is designed for woven fabrics. It works best with drapey fabrics such as cotton lawn, washed linen, Tencel, or viscose. Before cutting, prewash and iron your fabric, especially if it is made of natural fibres.
