Minna Konttijärvi is a Finnish patternmaker and designer currently based in Milan, Italy. She teaches others about sewing through tutorials on her blog, theshapesoffabric.com and posts on Instagram. Her patterns are a mix of traditional and creative techniques. You can find her blog post with tutorials for making the ECHO & CALLISTO here.
Geometric shapes are a common theme in Minna’s designs. Denim is one of her favourite fabrics: it works perfectly with sculptural and geometric forms. It is denim itself, along with geometry, that inspired Minna’s designs for this issue. The ECHO blouse refers to the repeated triangular shapes of the panel sleeves, while the CALLISTO dress – also the name of one of Jupiter’s moons – refers to the rounded shape of the lantern sleeves.
From each pattern purchase, we give 50% to the designer. Our goal is to support independent creatives and promote a democratic and open society.

Fabric Recommendations:
These patterns are designed for non-stretch woven materials. Choose light-weight denim, medium-weight linen, or cotton such as chambray, poplin, or Oxford. Think crisp, structural materials. While medium-weight denim works well for these designs, it will create a lot of bulk and your sewing machine may not sew through all the layers. You can add more structure to the sleeves by adding interfacing.
The ECHO blouse has lined sleeves. Use basic lining fabric or lightweight cotton. The samples are made from medium-weight denim from the designer’s stash.

“I made the Tauko Echo blouse, my first Tauko-pattern, and I honestly love the process and the fit. It was a rather quick make (but I made a simple sleeve using only the lining pattern) and the result is stunning. “ - Miet, Belgium
“The sleeves on Echo push at what I thought was possible with just fabric in a very wearable and unique way. It came together easily and beautifully with a perfect fit.” - Jess, Canada
