Join us for an evening of sashiko with Japanese textile artist and designer Keiko Oboshi, featured in TAUKO Magazine Issue No.21: Redesign.
Sashiko began as a practical technique for reinforcing and repairing worn textiles in Japan. Over generations, simple running stitches developed into beautiful geometric patterns. Today, sashiko offers a creative way to mend, decorate and transform the clothes and textiles we already own.
During the workshop, Keiko will introduce the foundations of sashiko, from traditional patterns to the rhythm and structure of the stitches. You'll learn how to apply the technique to your own project, whether you're repairing a favourite pair of jeans or adding something beautiful to an existing garment.
For Keiko, stitching is a form of drawing – one made with thread instead of ink. Her approach combines Japanese craft traditions with contemporary textile art, exploring repetition, geometry and the meditative pleasure of making by hand.
The evening is hosted by Mila Moisio, editor-in-chief and co-founder of TAUKO Magazine, bringing people together to stitch, share ideas and enjoy making in good company.
No previous sashiko experience is needed.

Bring something to repair, transform or decorate
This workshop is an invitation to work with something you already own.
Bring a pair of old jeans that needs mending, a jacket you'd like to decorate, a worn garment that deserves another life, or simply a piece of fabric you would like to experiment with.
Denim and other woven fabrics are particularly suitable for sashiko.
Joining in Berlin? We'll provide sashiko needles, threads and materials for practising. Just bring your own garment or textile.
Joining online? Prepare your garment or textile, a suitable hand-sewing needle, thread and scissors. You'll receive a preparation guide before the workshop.
You don't need to have a finished project in mind. Keiko will help you explore the possibilities and get started.
Beginners are warmly welcome!
