  • The design of DELOCALIZED bag is inspired by chemistry – more specifically, the hexagonal shapes found in organic molecules. The name refers to aromatic compounds in which electrons are not localized in a specific chemical bond, but connect to several neighbouring atoms – much like when we travel between different places or countries.

Marja Niemi has a background in textile technology and physical chemistry. She is a crafts enthusiast who lives in Helsinki, Finland, and loves to sew, knit, and darn. The DELOCALIZED bag is Marja’s first published sewing pattern.

  • Fit and size:
You can choose between two versions of this pattern: one is a small bag that can be worn either as a shoulder bag or a bum bag by adjusting the shoulder strap/belt, and the other is a larger pouch with a grab strap and an inner pocket with a zip. The size of the smaller bag is perfect for a passport, phone, and all the other small items you need close at hand while travelling. The size of the pouch comfortably holds a knitting project or travel cosmetics.

    Fabric recommendations:
Choose a heavy woven fabric such as cotton or linen canvas, or gabardine for the exterior. Medium-weight fabrics can be used if properly interfaced. You could also use waxed canvas, other coated fabrics, or even leather or faux leather. The lining fabric can be a more lightweight fabric – for example, cotton poplin. The ochre bag is made from a water-repellent canvas (8.85 oz/300 gsm) from Ecological Textiles and a cotton/linen lining. The white/grey pouch is made from acrylic-coated cotton fabric by Marimekko and a cotton poplin lining.

    Fabric requirements:
