The DEPARTURE tunic dress was designed with the idea of travelling back home: a place where we can be ourselves, a place of refuge and comfort. It is an effortless, versatile, and cosy garment that is equally beautiful on the inside as it is sewn primarily with French seams.

A fashion designer based Melbourne, Australia, Lina Gaviria devotes her practice to the “little details” – unexpected construction techniques, understated elements, and inside-out surprises.

Fit and size:
Choose your size based on your bust measurement. Add a recommended positive ease of 11"/28 cm. Pick the size that is the best match for your bust. The design is meant to be very loose-fitting. If you prefer a tighter fit, go down a size – but be mindful of your fabric.

Marium Durrani is 63"/160 cm tall and wears a gingham DEPARTURE tunic in size 3. Sophia Mitiku is 68"/173 cm tall and wears a striped DEPARTURE dress in size 2. For this version, the hem has been lengthened 15.7"/40 cm.

All patterns come in 9 sizes from bust width 31” / 78cm to 57.5” / 146cm.

Fabric recommendations:
Choose medium-weight non-stretch fabrics with good body and drape, such as linen, linen/viscose blends, cotton seersucker, cotton double cloth, or Tencel. Choose cotton poplin if you want a crisper look.

The gingham sample is made from muslin by Katia (71% cotton, 29% polyester, 4.72 oz/160 gsm) sold by Menita. The striped sample is made from organic fine poplin (100% cotton, 3.78 oz/128 gsm) from Ecological Textiles.

Files:
A4 (home printing) and A0 (copy shop printing) PDF files with layers, sizes nested. Sewing instructions are in a separate PDF file. As an extra, this pattern also includes “Paper saving pdf files” where each size has its own more efficient layout. If you only want to print one size, using these files is one way to reduce the amount of paper needed.
